How Home Security Systems Work

Home security systems work in a few different ways, but the most popular and basic method is an electric circuit system. These systems are usually installed in points of entry around the home, places like windows and doors. In an electric circuit system, electricity flows between two points of opposite charge. If the flow between those points is interrupted at any point, the circuit is broken.
Within an electric circuit system, there are two different types of circuits: open and closed. A closed circuit system is the most popular and reliable option. In a closed circuit, when the door or window of your home is shut, the circuit is closed and electricity is able to flow between each end of the circuit. When the system is activated, the circuit will be opened when the door or window is opened, which will then trigger an alarm. An open circuit, as the name would indicate, works in the opposite way. When a door is open, the circuit is closed, which triggers the alarm. These systems are unreliable because cutting certain wires can disable the alarm. Most home security systems used a closed circuit system.
This circuit system works in relation to a few other tools including a keypad, a powerbox, a telephone jack connection, and sensors. The keypad is usually placed near the door of the home. This is the interface that allows you to control the system, activate it, and program it. It is the brains of the operation. The keypad is also connected to the powerbox, which houses all the wiring from the keypad and the sensors. Sensors attach to the doors and windows in order to sense a broken circuit and relay the information to the keypad. The powerbox is usually equipped with a back-up battery in case of power outage. When the alarm is tripped, the system uses the phone jack to contact whatever emergency phone numbers have been programmed into it.
